On March 26, 2025, the Buhweju Chief Magistrate's Court convened the District Coordination Committee (DCC)meeting for the third quarter of the Financial Year 2024/25. The meeting was presided over by HW Mushime Moses, the resident Magistrate Grade I.
HW Mushime underscored the pivotal role of the DCC as a platform for stakeholders in the justice sector to enhance coordination, foster collaboration, and improve efficiency in the timely dispensation of justice at the district level.
He further reported that Buhweju Court currently has no case backlog. As of the end of February, the court had a caseload of 215 cases, comprising 150 civil cases and the remainder being criminal matters. He reaffirmed the Court’s commitment to expeditious justice delivery, highlighting the adoption of judicial innovations such as the Court Case Management System (CCAS) and the promotion of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms.
The meeting was attended by key stakeholders from key justice institutions within Buhweju District, including Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Tumwebaze Godfrey, Nuwajuna Francis representing the LCV Chairperson, Resident State Attorney Kyoma Deus, Officer-in-Charge of Buhweju Central Police Station SP Tumwesigye David, District Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Officer (D/CID/O) ASP Kiiza Benard, Officer-in-Charge of Buhweju Prisons Bitswatswa Charles, and Senior Probation and Welfare Officer Tumuhairwe Mary, among others.
The meeting deliberated on key challenges hindering the timely delivery of justice in the district, notably low witness attendance, geographical remoteness, and inadequate public awareness of the justice system. It was further noted that cases related to domestic violence, planned murders, and assaults are on the rise. In response, the Committee resolved to intensify community sensitization efforts and strengthen inter-agency coordination to enhance justice delivery.
Additionally, the district representatives called upon the Judiciary to expedite the operationalization of the Nyakashaka Town Council Court to bring justice services closer to the people of Buhweju West County.
